The Test will include:

I. Some (10) oral short answer questions:

What kind of university is Willamette?

On campus, is there a ______ ?

Where is it?

What kind of building is it? (10)

II. Some written questions based on a chart containing information (10)

III. Some English to Japanese short phrases and complete sentences (15)

IV. Fill in the blanks and give the English for each sentence (5)

V. 5 Katakana for recognition, and 7 for production like the following:

Summary of Key Grammar Points:

I. THINGS これ、それ、あれ = This thing, That thing, That thing over there, e.g. これは　大きい　かばん　です。

 

II. PLACES ここ、そこ、あそこ、どこ？= This place, That place, That place over there, Where?

 

So, these are 2 examples from the こ、そ、あ、ど family of words; they always refer to This, That,That over there.

これ refers to This Thing;

ここ refers to This Place

Etc

 

We use these Place Words with a Patterns like: Something　は　 Some Location に　あります：　　

ほん　は　ここに　あります= The book is here;

カフェは　あそこに　あります = The cafe is over there.

 

IN THIS PATTERN, THE THING WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS MOST IMPORTANT, SO IT IS MENTIONED FIRST

If we are taking about people or pets instead of things, we use the verb　います.　　

やまださんは　そこに　います = Yamada-san is there.

ねこは 　ここに　います = The cat is here.

NOTE: あります／います are verbs of existence or location = There are rendered in English like this: In some location THERE IS A....or

THE/PERSON Y___IS LOCATED IN/AT THE....=

YAMADA-SAN IS THERE = やまださんは　そこに　います

THE CAT IS HERE = ねこは 　ここに　います

 

III. い　and な adjectives. These are usually IS or です sentences.　

ゆうびんきょくは　りっぱな　たてもの　です。= The post office is a splendid building.

 

デパートは　大きい　です。The department store is big.

 

い Adjectives can appear in front of a Noun with no Particle needed: 　たかい　たてもの、大きい うち、ちいさい　いぬ

 

Negative Form of い Adjective　＝　drop final い and replace it with くand then add -ない　です　or　ありません。

なAdjectives = cannot appear in front of a noun without a particle; we must use な as our particle instead of の which we use between 2 nouns;

きれいな　たてもの = a pretty/clean building

りっぱな　大学 = a splendid university

ゆうめいな　先生 = a famous teacher

 

To negate な Adjectives we keep them just as they are but you have tot add + or じゃ ないです:　

ゆうめい　です = It's famous = ゆうめい　じゃ　ありません= It's not famous;

りっぱ　です = It's fine/spendid = りっぱ　じゃ　ありません = It's not splendid/fine　

 

IV. LOC に　Thing/Person が　あります／います = the second variant of this pattern where the LOCATION COMES FIRST

Describes the scene in which something exists or is located = "In this location...there is a ____"

IN THIS PATTERN, THE LOCATION WE ARE TALKING ABOUT IS MOST IMPORTANT, SO IT IS MENTIONED FIRST, e.g.,

ここに、Here, IN THIS LOCATION....Something or someone Exists

OR LIKE

キャンパスに、on the campus,

OR

学生かいかんに, in the UC/Student Union, etc.,

In other words, we set the scene and this is followedby a description of Some Thing or Person が　あります／います who IS THERE in the scene

e.g.

ここに　あおい　かばん が　あります＝　Here, there is a blue bookbag

キャンパスに　ふるい たてもの が　あります　＝ On campus, there are old buildings

学生かいかんに　学生 が　います　＝ In the student union, there are students

このへんに　ぎげんこうが　あります = Around here, there is a bank

UC に　ぎんこう が　あります = In the UC there is a bank

 

 

There is also the question:

Loc　に 　What Kind of　（どんな）＿＿＿＿ is/are there?

 

どんな？ question word meaning = What Kind of?

ウィラメット大学は　どんな　大学　ですか - How would you answer?

 

ウィラメット大学 に　どんな　たてものが　ありますか。

 

X−ホールは　どんな たてもの　ですか。たかい／きれいな／りっぱな

　

ウィラメット大学は　どんな 大学　ですか。いい／ちいさい／たかい／ふるい　

 

どんな ペン ですか。あかい／あおい／くろい

 

V. Ending Particles　ね (right?) 　and　よ (emphatic)! 　

いま　３：３０ ですね = It is 3:30 right now, right?

いいえ、４：００ ですよ =　No, it's 4:00 pm!

りっぱ な　たてもの　です　ね = It's a splendid building, isn't it? [You think so and you assume your listener will agree with you.]

 

 

Sentence Patterns we are likely to see:

  1. an old book--->This (thing) is an old book.

  2. small university--->This (thing) is a small university

  3. big department store---->That (thing) is a big department store

  4. new station--->That (thing) over there is a new station

  5. Is there a bank around here? (Lit., Around here/In this vicinity, IS THERE a bank?)

  6. Yes, it is in the Student Union.

  7. a famous town-->That (thing) IS a famous town.

  8. a very pretty park-->That (thing) IS a pretty park.

  9. What kind of building is Goudy Commons? どんな Question

  10. Over there, there is a tall building, right? 　[あそこに　たかい　たてものが　あります、ね]

  11. red pen--->This (thing) is a red pen.----> My red pen is there. (2 different sentence types!)

  12. Ueda-san's house is not very large.

  13. Where is the school?

  14. What kind of university is Willamette University? どんな Question

  15. My blue book bag is over there.

  16. That (thing) over there is a small convenience store.

  17. Is there a supermarket around here? (see #5)

  18. Yes, it is over there.

  19. Is there a post office on campus?はい／いいえ
  20. Where is it? どこ　に　ありますか？
  21. It is in the student union.
